However, when I press Ctrl-N no new window appears (an “invisible” tab appears). Is it possible to disable file tabbing altogether? And have Ctrl-N open a new Notepad++ window?</p>

I was confused because I thought you mean that double-clicking<br />
on a file will automatically start a new instance of npp. But this doesn’t make sense<br />
when reading the rest of your question. Sometimes I should just take the time to<br />
read the post carfully and maybe twice. But good to see that your fouund a solution<br />
to your issue.</p>

<p dir="auto">I assume what you want is ALT+F6, but if you want to reassign the shortcurt you can do so.<br />
<strong>Settings-&gt;Shortcut Mapper</strong><br />
In <strong>Main menu</strong> you need to relase the CTRL+N for a new tab and in <strong>Run commands</strong> you need to<br />
modify <strong>Open in another instance</strong></p>
