you need to ensure that your initial selection of text is already
a rectangular selection (aka the column mode).
The kind of behavior you describe happens if you do a normal selection
and then paste in column mode.

Note, I posted the example text because maybe others would try @Claudia-Frank 's instructions and comment–does it work or doesn’t it… Posting screenshots like @Black-Yuzia did is okay but better is real text here so that those that want to try it for themselves don’t have to type it in, they can just copy-n-paste.

I select text and paste, but that not enough.

place the cursor before the aaaaa text,
press shift+alt and keep it pressed.
use the left/right/up/down arrow keys to select the amount of text you want to be copied
once you have the text press ctrl+c to copy
place the cursor in front of text which needs to be replaced
repeat the steps to select the text which should be replaced
once done, press ctrl+v to paste the new text.

You can achieve the same selection by using keep pressing shift+alt and using the mouse.
