It obvious that the two variants should be presented by different icons considering different adopting regions. While it is not suitable to use Hong Kong SAR flag here because it is not a national flag and Hong Kong is not equivalent to the word “Mainland”, in most cases Traditional Chinese is represented by the national flag used in Taiwan.(For me it is the flag to Republic of China rather than that to Taiwan)
The question is the traditional variant is simply called “Chinese” with Simplified Chinese and the flag of PRC after it. So the author maybe preferring the traditional variant and think only this could represent Chinese.
Again in most cases, using the flag to ROC(Taiwan) for region differentiation is common and practical. This measure may be doubtful in Mainland but this is an international website.
I come from mainland China, and I love traditional Chinese.
