It works fine when I have rows selected. Am I missing something, or is that not possible?</p>

<p dir="auto">Columns++ (which Alan mentioned) is not yet available through the Plugins Admin in Notepad++, but you can find <a href="https://github.com/Coises/ColumnsPlusPlus/releases/latest/" rel="nofollow ugc">the latest release here</a>. If you have Notepad++ installed in the default location, you can use the “Quick Installer” link in that release description — just download it and run it.</p>
<p dir="auto">The function you want is described <a href="https://coises.github.io/ColumnsPlusPlus/help.htm#search" rel="nofollow ugc">here in the help</a>. You can check that out first to see if seems like it will work for you.</p>

<p dir="auto">It’s just not something native Notepad++ can do, despite repeated requests to the developer that this is necessary core functionality.</p>
<p dir="auto">Luckily, at least one plugin can do it for you.  Check out <em>Columns++</em>.</p>
<p dir="auto">If you want to check out “scripting” with Notepad++ in Python, another option would be to use the <em>PythonScript</em> plugin in conjunction with a script I posted <a href="https://community.notepad-plus-plus.org/topic/22180">HERE</a>.</p>
