    Also, what good free alternatives are there for Mac - I’m new to this operating system.

      Notepad++ is not written to be portable to Mac OSX, Linux, etc. It is VERY much tied to Windows. I like TextWrangler on OSX, but it is not really similar to Notepad++, except that they are both text editors obviously.

        I run Notepad++ on Linux with the help of “Wine” (originally an acronym for “Wine Is Not an Emulator”) it works great too! have used NP++ on Windows since it was new !
        It’s still my favorite editor of all time.
