        The HexEditor plugin can cause this. If you have it installed, uninstall it.

            @Alex-Semenov

            I tried it as you’ve described but didn’t get the access violation.
            Can you try to do the same but using npp core only - without plugins at all.
            Easiest way would be to rename the plugin directory and then start npp.
            Btw. which npp version do you use?

            Cheers
            Claudia

              Last NPP version.
              Thank you.
              I tried without plugins and the error disappeared.
              including the plugin one by one, found the cause -> CCompletion is bugged.

                I have the same problem.
                @alex-semenov: I don’t have CCompletion installed but NPP still crash if I try to doubleclick a *.nfo file

                Drag & drop and File -> Open for the same *.nfo works fine.

                (NPP v7.4.1)

                  For CCompletion issue, see https://www.exploit-db.com/exploits/31895/. The last version of the plugin seems to be 1.19 without an update since at least 2011-08-01.
