Second-level parenthesis sometimes doesn't automatically close

Automatic closing of parentheses is a very useful feature, but it doesn’t work if I open a parenthesis, type some text then open a second parenthesis: the second left parenthesis isn’t automatically closed. Is this a bug or an intended limitation?
