    I updated to 7.4 this morning and found that I could not save any newly created file. Note: I’m working in folders I’ve been working in for more than a year, and nothing in the configurations have changed; this issue happens both on the server (Windows Server 2012 R2, through FTP and VPN/mapped network drive) and on my local machine. (Windows 10).

    Open a file from yesterday, save: saves fine.
    Copy a file from yesterday, rename it. Open, edit, saves fine.
    Create a new text file in Windows explorer on local machine. Open, edit, save: “file may be protected, open in administrator mode?”
    Create a new text file in Windows explorer on mapped drive. Open, edit, save: “file may be protected, open in administrator mode?”
    Create a new text file using WinSCP. Download, edit, save: “file may be protected, open in administrator mode?”

    When I do reopen in admin mode, I still can’t save the file.

    When I downgraded to 7.3, the issue went away and I’m back to work as usual.

    It is unlikely this is a Windows permissions issue: I’m able to work in the folders using Windows Notepad, Libreoffice, Gimp, Inkscape, and of course Notepad++ 7.3.

        @William-Morris This issue has been fixed. Please try this binary (x64 version, to replace the original one):
        https://notepad-plus-plus.org/temp/notepad++.zip

        and confirm me the issue is gone.

          @donho I installed notepad++ 7.4 64-bit on a new work laptop today, and was encountering same behavior as @William-Morris with a newly-created .txt file on my Windows 10 desktop: “file may be protected, open in administrator mode?”.

          I tried your binary file above, and the problem is resolved: the .txt file saves successfully.

            I would like to report that I have also run into the described issue.

            However, using the binary posted by @donho has fixed it for me.

            Huge Thanks!

                      I can’t save in v7.5.1 (32-bit). What should I do? V7.4.1 isn’t available anymore: https://notepad-plus-plus.org/download/all-versions.html

                        @LAPIII
                        https://notepad-plus-plus.org/download/v7.4.2.html is still available, but
                        7.5.1 also contains the fixes of the previous releases. So your issue is probably a new issue yet unknown issue. Under https://notepad-plus-plus.org/community/topic/14392/just-another-ordinary-release-7-5-1 there seems to be no such problem report. So you could try to add a more complete description of the problem in that thread or report it at https://github.com/notepad-plus-plus/notepad-plus-plus/issues
