Why would you use “filehippo”? Get N++ only from its official download site. Hint, search Notepad++ download.

I believe this has nothing to do with choice distribution channel (npp is a minor utility tool). I expect a common channel has the same quality assurance and approval by each product owner. End of discussion! Unless a solution to the problem reported is identified

Hear my words. Duplicated again above. Read them one more time. Ok, finally, do it even one more time.

If you would do that, you would find that 7.6.5 has been pulled due to a critical issue. Because idiots copy Notepad++ releases to other sites (such as the one you cited), and other idiots use those copies (hint, hint), it is impossible for the Notepad++ team to pull back all copies of such critically-problem’ed releases.

I don’t even know what this means.

npp is a minor utility tool

Pretty insulting to the N++ team that works hard (and long hours) to bring you a totally free tool (and support).

          End of discussion!

Just WHO THE FVCK are you to “end the discussion”?? LOL.

And finally, dude, this is just “shortcut” stuff. Not that hard to fix up. Learn to use a computer. Sheesh.

welcome to the notepad++ community, @Sverre-T

i apologise for the current situation and emotional outbursts.

please download the notepad++ 7.6.6. installer 64 bit from here:
            https://notepad-plus-plus.org/repository/7.x/7.6.6/npp.7.6.6.Installer.x64.exe
and install it over your existing notepad++.

if your npp jumplist still does not work, please click on plugins > open plugins folder... and remove the NppJumpList folder.
then use the built in plugins > plugins admin to reinstall jumplist version 1.2.2.0 again from within plugins admin.

please keep us informed about your issue.
idealy providing your debug information from ? > debug info... > copy debug info into clipboard if it still does not work.
we will try to assist you in a more civilised manner.

            best regards

i know you are upset, but please don’t lose your temper when answering.
i have not been able to read anything that was grave enough to produce an outburst like that.

Not really. More entertained than anything else. My responses meant to be humorous, with a tinge of seriousness. Hopefully there is room for that here when people post oddball things.

Thx. Good to see helpful response on a simple and straight forward problem and not just spam replies with accusations instead of keeping out (is there a way to block and report other “users”?) - even when encouraged to do so - the need is evident from looking at this thread. No help or response to the addressed issue - just bullshit.

Prior to your reply, I tried to download both the 32-bit and the x64 edition of 7.66 from this page. I get the same installation warning as las time (from filehippo) - which can be surpassed. But I have used npp for yrs and upgraded every minor release and cannot recall to have seen that before - and being security alerted - it makes me worried - so it seems to be somewhat changed. And for me the jumplist is a critical part of administering the many text files I use. At the same time I want to have the latest and greatest version available. I am surprised if noone else has experienced a similar issue.

Before I proceed, I mention the following (although haven’t experienced any other apps that has had problems with this functionality)

                1. I upgraded from win7 to win10 (you know the seemless way - which kept my installed apps and data and maybe my last 7.6.3 upgrade dated from win7?)
                2. My npp help->about reports version 7.6.3 32 bit

I would prefer the 64-bit - but for me the jumplist is an important component to preserve and your advise how to recompose it might well work. But the problem is that the upgrade do not take care of maintaining the same jumplist and taskbar mapping (which is also a new experience and makes things troublesome, i.e. a hazzle). The previous npp “icon” gets blank (NULL) - but keeps the old jumplist but files cannot be accessed as the npp installation directory could be changed.

So I believe something has changed in the build since January - that needs som special attention and maybe other users see the same sticky problem.

It would be easier if I could attach some screen shots - but only links is supported. So I hope my description is sufficient.

                Cheers Sverre

you can flag a post for moderation, but i can not see a reason grave enough to block any user.

this migration might be a known problem on windows 10 build 1809, which i hope you have not experienced.

My npp help->about reports version 7.6.3 32 bit

the filehippo.com link you provided was for the 7.6.6. 64 bit version, hence the providing of the official 7.6.6. 64 bit link.

But the problem is that the upgrade do not take care of maintaining the same jumplist and taskbar mapping (which is also a new experience and makes things troublesome, i.e. a hazzle). a screenshot of your experienced view would be good.
screenshots have to be uploaded anywhere externally, e.g. at the free imgur.com.
to embed your image, you have to post the image using the markdown syntax with a leading !
                  example: ![Imgur](https://i.imgur.com/oKCf0ua.png)

here is a screenshot of how it should look like on a clean install of windows 10 x64 build 1809, with notepad++ 7.6.6. 64 bit and npp jumplist, installed via the built in plugins admin:
                  Imgur

if it looks different on your system, eventually it will help to

                  • go to plugins > open plugins folder... to open your plugins location in windows explorer.
                  • then open the Config folder, make a backup of your old NppJumpList.ini in case you might need it for reference, and delete NppJumpList.ini from the Config folder.
                  • then close and reopen notepad++ and adjust your jumplist settings to your need.

if this does not work, i hope we will somehow find a way to get jumplist to a normal state on your migrated system, without the need of a windows re-install.
(usually fixing things like these are possible without a clean windows install, but as we know, such things can take a long time of trial and error)

                  best regards

Mention that I use the windows jumplist taskbar builtin and not the npp jumplist. The builtin works fine as-is - as long as I do not install the most recent upgrades… I think I tried the npp version a while ago but the problem is often that I want to have a long pinned file list as well as see recent files pinnable. Maybe a minor issue for som but for me it is essential :)

I have uploaded some screen shots in dropbox shared folder

and also checked my win10 release and might suffer from possible jumplist problem

                        @Sverre-T

                        thank you for your screenshots.
a little summary (except the win 7 to 10 upgrade) to make sure i understood everything correctly:

you wanted to upgrade to 7.6.6. 64 bit and experienced the following:

                        • unknown publisher warning while downloading 7.6.6. 64 bit:
this is expected, as notepad++ has changed from windows code signing to GnuPG digital signatures. no further actions are required, if you download from the official source.

                        • once you installed 7.6.6. 64 bit from the link you provided, your windows built in jump list was empty:
this is expected, as the windows built in jump list saves the history per application. if an application has major changes, including switching from 32 to 64 bits, windows will present you with an empty jump list. for that it is recommended to use the jumplist plugin, as it will present you with the history saved within notepad++, which can be adjusted in size directly from the notepad++ settings, and also be imported to different versions of notepad++ (part of the main reasons why this plugin was created).

                        • if you additionally tried to install 7.6.6. 32 bit and the windows built in jump list was empty and stayed empty:
this can happen for 32 bit applications on migrated windows 7 to 10 systems. i currently don’t know a fix for that, but the internet is full of it (not regarding notepad++ but other applications).

                        • after installing 7.6.6. 64 bit your notepad++ icon was gone:
this is usually fixed by rebooting windows 10. the icon is set correctly, but windows 10 will sometimes require a reboot to refresh it’s shell icon cache.

                        • after reloading a last restore point (similar to uninstalling 7.6.6. 64 bit and reinstalling 7.6.3. 32 bit) your windows built in jumplist is back again:
this is thankfully expected for both ways of reverting (as long as the jumplist cache has not been cleared by windows yet).

at this stage i can only give you following recommendations, with the hope that at least one of them will serve you:

                        • stay on 7.6.3. 32 bit, if you do not want to create your jump list from scratch.

                        • uninstall your 7.6.3. 32 bit. (you will lose the windows jumplist as well as all notepad++ customisations),
and install notepad++ 7.6.6. from >>> here <<<, starting with a fresh windows jumplist to be filled during the next days.
(the 64 bit version is recommended, and it will solve if you eventually experience a windows jumplist that stays empty all the time for some of your 32 bit applications)

                        • additionally to above, install the NppJumpList plugin, to allow a later transfer of the jumplist history and settings, as well as custom notepad++ commands at your jumplist.

                        • make a dual notepad++ setup, keeping your 7.6.3. 32 bit as is, and adding an extra, completely independent 7.6.6. 64 bit portable to use or for tryout purposes:

                          • download the notepad++ 7.6.6. 64 bit portable version from >>> here <<<.
(the portable version does not require any installation and runs completely independent and isolated from your installed version. all custom settings, as well as any stuff you might want to try at the portable version, will not modify your installed version.
a multiple notepad++ setup, using one or more portable versions, will allow you to test and try out anything, without eventually breaking your daily workflow with your main notepad++ install.)

                          • extract the contents of npp.7.6.6.bin.x64.zip to e.g. C:\PortableApps\npp.7.6.6.bin.x64.

                          • create a shortcut of C:\PortableApps\npp.7.6.6.bin.x64\notepad++.exe on your desktop.
(note: notepad++.exe will just be seen as notepad++, if you have enabled to hide all known file extensions at your explorer settings)

                          • optionally also install the nppjumplist plugin on this portable version for transferability reasons.

                        best regards

Thx a lot for your advise and useful and to the point helpful descriptions.

Of course the easy strategy is to stick to current 7.6.3 32 bit forever (which works fine). But I believe this upgrade/jumplist problem is due to the mentioned win7/win10 recent upgrade. For example, I was not able to install the jumplist plugin, I could not upgrade another (no errors displayed), I also tried the
                          ? -> upgrade

menu option. But nothing happened. So I can live with creating the jumplist from scratch - the reported problem however did not show any recent files from taskbar icon and hence could not pin any files at all using the windows built in.

                          I will try the following

                          1. Uninstall current 7.6.3
                          2. Reinstall the x64 most recent one
                          3. Try the plugin manager to see if it works
                          4. Adapt the config that suits my need.

If I’m not happy I once again revert using win restore… I am pretty dependent on this component of windows and text files are an important file src
