Notepad++ no longer reliable!
-
For several years, I’ve used and relied on Notepad++ to store my personal notes and comments on various and sundry matters. But in the past several months, everything has gone haywire! I can no longer rely on this software to retain the notes I’ve written for any length of time. It saves things for a while, but then suddenly everything is wiped out! What’s going on here? Have I somehow screwed up my default settings? I’ve looked in vain for some kind of Customer Service number to call and inquire about this, but so far can find no human being to provide answers. Unless things improve with this software – and soon! – I may have to give it all up as a lost cause. Please help!

welcome to the notepad++ community, @Edward-Beach
i’m sorry to hear that you lost your personal notes.
usually notepad++ is as reliable as it was for the past years.may i ask if you save your notes to a file on your hard drive, or if you just open a new tab and keep it unsaved as a temporary scrap note ?
if you keep unsaved “new 1” tabs as scrap notes, are you on windows 10 ?
reason for the questions is, that windows 10 will currently reboot your pc by itself to install windows updates, without asking for your permission.
so it will happen, that your pc reboots by itself, while your pc is not in use, shutting down notepad++ without enough time to save your unsaved temporary data.
please also provide us with your notepad++ debug information, by going to the menu
? > debug info... > copy debug info into clipboard
and pasting it here, as it will help us to adapt suggestions to your pc and notepad++ version.@Alan-Kilborn
lol, sounds like the tape of a banking help-line 😄 -
Did you put your notes in named files you actually saved?
Or did you rely only on the automatic session backup?
Notepad++ is a BAD tool for notes. Personally I turned off automatic backup and snapshots and only let it remember my session files which I am OK to lose occasionally.
Perhaps these features can be made more reliable and robust but there will always be better tools designed to take “notes” while Notepad++ power is editing.For notes use OneNote (see the “note” in the name). Or a free alternative like ZiM.
