    I would like to install npp on a laptop which I do not have admin rights.

    I unzipped the files on another machine. Copied those to the target machine in my directory.

    I can open npp but it takes 16sec to open. On the same machine, Word opens in 1 second as does basic notepad.

    What might I do to get a fast openning of npp and to open fast when it is the registered app for opening text files?

      For me, there are no performance differences between running an installed version or running from an unzipped version on the same drive. Something else is likely going on with your system, and it will be very difficult for us to guess what it might be, especially without any information from you that might give us a clue as to what’s going on.

        Peter,

        Thank you for the suggestion and link.

        Notepad++ v7.8.3   (64-bit)
        Build time : Zip and 7z
        Path : C:\Programrj\Notepad++\notepad++.exe
        Admin mode : OFF
        Local Conf mode : [I don't know]
        OS : Windows 10 (64-bit)
        Plugins : [None]

        Not being an admin on this machine, I cannot add to the typical program folder.
        I don’t know what the local conf mode is.

          Instead of manually generating that information, please use the ? menu’s Debug Info, and click the Copy debug info into clipboard, as the FAQ suggested. That will get us accurate info, rather than the “don’t know” and other missing information.

            And even with accurate info, you are going to have to tell us more about your situation, because, as I said, there is no performance difference between installed and unzipped versions.

            Questions to think about: is Notepad++.exe on same drive as word.exe? Do you have a file in your MRU list in Notepad++ that is on a network drive, or a separate HDD/SSD? Does your admin have a process watcher that is scanning or throttling unapproved apps? Etc
