Recovering an Unsaved File that was Closed

As most of you likely already know, when someone creates a file in Notepad++, if backup is turned on, then files are auto-saved into a backup folder. Foolishly, I relied on this as my sole data saving resource. I accidentally clicked the close button on a tab that I was selecting, and, without reading, instinctively clicked “No” when prompted to save, as my initial thought was that I was being asked if I was sure that I wanted to close the tab, which I did not want to do. In any event, once I clicked no, the file was closed and auto-deleted from my backup folder. Sadly, this was a file of critical importance to me. That said, does anyone know of any way that I could recover a Notepad++ file that was closed without officially saving it and then auto-removed from the backup folder?

Sorry, but I don’t know of a way to recover your file.
But, it begs the question, can’t such files be moved to the Recycle Bin rather than deleted?
In the future, if you give your file a name in the file system (I always recommend doing this), and if you turn on Verbose Backup, even if your file is deleted (accidently or on purpose), the backups that were previously made by Notepad++ remain in the backup location. I tested this.

You have a good chance with tools like recuva, especially if you can remember the name of temporary file.

Well, if you named your tab
zebrafor example (surely nobody would let a long-term, critical data file sit there for a long time with a name likenew 2), you’d have to look for a file to recover named like this:zebra@2021-06-21_164728or – gasp – even:
new 2@2021-06-21_164728In other words, expect that type of naming, DON’T just go looking for something with only the base name, because I don’t think you’ll find it.
