Save on exit preventing computer reboot

Notepad++ is awesome! Thanks for all the effort keeping it great!
I seem to have discovered a new feature in one of the recent releases, and can’t see any Settings to disable it.
When I attempt to shut down/restart my computer while N++ is still open, N++ prevents shutdown with Save dialogs for any unsaved tabs.
Previously those files would have been saved by N++'s fabulous auto-backup, and there was no requirement to manually save files.
I cannot replicate it in a quick test now by
- creating new tabs
- typing something
- closing N++
ie: in this quick test (not a reboot), N++ shuts down as expected - no Save dialogs.
For the record, some/most of the files I’m working with are disposable or stored elsewhere anyway, so I don’t want to save them. Some other files are transient and I’m happy for them to reside in N++'s backup.
To reiterate, this seems to be a new feature that has only started after a recent update to N++. (Current v8.4.7)
N++'s Backup is turned on and working as expected.
Is there anything I can do to stop N++ from forcing the Save? Yes, yes… I know you are going to tell me to shut down all open apps before shutting down the computer. Very 1980s! ;-) But since all other apps shut themselves down gracefully these days, and N++ USED TO likewise exit without a fuss…

This might be “very 1980s”, but the recent changes in Notepad++ that have caused the “problem” you are writing about, were actually done to protect you from losing data.
In fact, it is recommended by power users of Notepad++ to not carry “unsaved” files (with data you care about) around for longer than it takes to give them a hard-name in your file system. Why? Because it has been demonstrated time and time again that you are putting your data at risk.
Even for hard-named files, it doesn’t pay to leave them “unsaved”, and rely on Notepad++ to maintain that state. Sure, it is 2022 and everything should be fine, but do you want to be one of so many that post here “my data got lost, can I get it back?” (which so often has the short answer - “no”). This can be the answer even when the N++ backup system is in use.
The bottom line is that you need to do the best you can to protect your own data. Someone else may be “sorry” if you lose it, but you may be devastated.
Is there anything I can do to stop N++ from forcing the Save?
To QUOTE the developers, “Already fixed, will be in the next N++ version” (presumably meaning 8.4.8).

To provide a solution for others with this problem, I think the last version without this behavior is 8.4.6 here.
Just adding my two cents that I also greatly dislike this behavior, and as a “power user” who has done everything in NPP for around ten years, always keeping dozens of unnamed/unsaved files open, I have never lost data. I’ve lost far more from saving (and overwriting) named files than from losing any unnamed ones.
The new prompts have been annoying enough to make me look at alternatives and revert to old versions. Preventing a quick shutdown is a huge problem. It doesn’t matter what best practices someone thinks the user should have.
I’m glad the developer has announced a fix.

Then N++ lost my data. :-(
For the record, I was never “risky” with my data, and I had independent backups; what I lost was a few hours worth of work – I mean, one can’t back-up constantly, can they?It doesn’t matter what best practices someone thinks the user should have.

This is just a place for sharing experiences, and trying to give helpful advice, based upon those experiences, to others.

I’m also really a huge fan of N++ and very thankful to all the people who do the work.@Alan-Kilborn If it’s “not a bug, but a feature”, I really don’t see it as useful:
- People who use N++ will usally know what files and backups are and can decite for themselves
- I perform system backups
- I use unsaved files as quick, temporary notes that I usually don’t want to go back to. Nice to have, but I can live with them being gone.
- Prompling me 80 times with a Save-dialogue when I want to go to sleep won’t change my behaviour, but make me kill the app.
- If you want to prevent unexperienced users from data loss, that’s a fair goal, but there are definetly better ways to do so.
But if it’s already fixed and in 8.4.8, there’s no need to discuss it further, right?

If you want to interpret what I said as those 6 words, then, well, OK.
The takeaway from all this should be that the developers took some steps to protect your data from loss. The fact that they didn’t quite get it all the way solved on the first try, well, those kinds of things happen. They worked on it again; perhaps they fully got it right. Perhaps not.
However, everyone is free to make their own choice to act dangerously with their own data. Maybe we’ll see you again here someday, like a lot of others, asking how it can be recovered.

@Alan-Kilborn It is dumb to say developers are trying to protect us that is why now N++ won’t close when I select Shut Down. If that was the case, then N++ should not allow dark background because devs want to protect our eyes. As always, this could be a simple checkbox: you want this behaviour or not.

Actually, dark backgrounds DO protect your eyes. Something I wish now I had used earlier in computing usage…so your point is irrelevant and incorrect. Try again? Your point, is subjective whether it is beneficial or not. That is the point…you are also, free to use or not use something you disagree with. Until you produce your own, you can always go back to using Notepad.exe instead. It doesn’t do anything like what you have a problem with. -

@Alan-Kilborn Some years ago I also “lost” the files in Notepadd++ Tabs…
But they were still available in the backup folders and need only to be “reopened” as new tabs (with optional copy&paste content to avoid using the origin backup folder files) -
@Maxitrol-Mat Whether black is good or not depends on the contemporary interpretation… ^^
I remember from my student days that we had to replace a NEXT station computer and scrap it per se because it was completely black (case, monitor, keyboard)
But at the same time, consequently, all Windows 3.0 to at least Windows 7 computer systems should have been scrapped, because the default color is white/black and could hardly be changed and pretty much never was, which clearly violates the German workplace guidelines for eye protection…
