Notepad++ cannot open SRT

Just lately Notepad++ updates or whatever either don’t open in reasonable time or the “throbber” goes on forever and locks up the rest of the PC SRTs are for processing subtitles.

Is it necessary to convert the SRT extension to .txt to see what’s on them?

Please repair. Notepad++ was a lifeline for working with the SRTs ealier.

Also why no spell checker for these forum posts ?

From Windows Explorer right click on an SRT file and select either

• Edit with Notepad++
• Select Open With and then Notepad++

Or, right click on an SRT file and select Open With and then “Choose another App” at the bottom of the list. At the top of the box that pops up it will show the default application that is used for SRT files. If you want to make the default Notepad++ then pick it and then click on “Always.”

I use Firefox and it has a spell checker. I suspect all web browsers these days have spell checker. For example, the word “SRT” is not in my spell dictionary and so there are red squiggle underlines under them.

There should be no problem opening them without conversion.

Would you try this:

First, open Notepad++.

Next, use File|Open… to find and open an srt file. Does that work as expected?

If not, regain control, start Notepad++ again, select ? | Debug Into…, click Copy debug info into clipboard and then paste the results into a follow-up message here. That will give us some details that might help us figure out what is happening.

If File|Open… works, then you might have a problem with file associations. Try mkupper’s suggestion and see what happens.

Apologies. I see I have duplicated a post since I did not get any notifications of replies to this one. I’ll try to load through File/Open rather than dragging and dropping.

Yes, I followed the advice to open the SRT through the Explorer menu and got it open.

Again, I had no notification so did not know people were responding with solutions.

If you have notifications enabled in the forum, then the forum emails them out. But sometimes the receiving servers will remove emails that they consider spam – even before it makes it to your spam folder, so even checking spam folders is not enough. In today’s internet, relying on email for notifications (or anything, really) is a dangerous proposition, because you never know when an overactive spam filter (which may or may not be accessible by the recipient) will remove the email. Spammers have successfully crippled email systems to the point that they are virtually worthless.
