Yet another old computer support issue
-
Decades ago, I worked for a county MIS dept.
We housed a couple of IBM mainframes a DEC and a Wang.Yep, they actually had a Wang and a user would backup stuff from their office on 5 1/4" floppies.
When they would attempt to restore the data from the floppies they kept having problems.
The support desk worked with them for weeks, trying to find the issue.
All possible issues were eliminated and finally they had someone go to the site and sit with them to make sure that what they said they were doing was actually what they were doing.
So, they sat there and watched them run the backup process and feed several 5 1/4" floppies into the PC/terminal.
The job finished and the lady took the small stack of floppies and said, “I then take these and put them on the filing cabinet” and she walked over to the filing cabinet and took a large magnet on the cabinet and stuck the floppies to the side of the cabinet with the magnet!
Honestly, people just don’t get it.When, someone called into support one of the very first questions we always had to ask was, “Is the computer or monitor plugged in.” Way too many times the answer was eventually, “no”. Most liked to argue that, “of course it’s plugged in.”
Ahhh, the “good” old days.
