Time limit on editing messages

I replied to a post on this forum, and then wanted to change the wording slightly. I then got a messages saying that I had just 5 seconds to make an edit!
Maybe there is a reason for preventing edits after a large time lapse, but surely 5 seconds is absurdly short!

Now it is 180 seconds - which is still a bit crazy if you want to rephrase something. Would it help to discuss what type of abuse this short time scale is meant to solve, so people could agree a reasonable time limit, or set it to infinity if that is not going to open the system to some sort of attack.
I do realise the pressure that you are all under, but a really short editing period makes for more scrappy, less thought out contributions - which is a shame.
