Notepad++ - Trying to compile & link in VC8 on Win7

I have an old cd with Visual Studio 8 but now have a new laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium. I installed VC8 on it. Seems to work mostly OK, - can even compile an old version of npp I have (v5.8.8), except when I try to edit the .RC files it buggers things up & the dialogs get scrambled, etc. Something about embedded resources, etc. Anyone else having this problem ?
I’d like to use the latest source if possible, and have considered downloading on of the Visual Studio Express versions. Has anyone successfully compiled it using GCC ?
