What is the proper way to update the portable edition of Notepad++ while retaining the settings from your prior version?

In the past, I would simply unzip the updated portable ZIP file over what was already on my PC (except for the shortcuts.xml file–that, I would keep the file I already had). This would update NPP but retain all my plugins and settings.

However, this caused an issue when I tried updating to v7. I had to instead unzip v7 to a fresh folder and manually redo all my settings and macros.

What is the proper way to update the portable edition?

      Thanks.
