      Hi!
      I am working with Notepad++ 7.5.1. Double-clicking on the lower bar gives you the number of characters in the file. But it does not always work. Is it a bug? Is it better to use an extension? Thank you.

        @Manlio-Bovecchi

        tried a couple of times but haven’t had an issue.
        Do you know, that you could use the menu View->Summary to get the same dialog?
        Maybe assign a shortcut?

        Or does

        But it does not always work

        mean something different? Like not correctly working?

        Cheers
        Claudia

          That kind of report just makes anyone that wants to help have to do more work. Please try to be more specific in why you think it doesn’t work…

          But I’ll offer up a couple of ideas:

          • In View (menu) -> Summary… (equivalent to your status bar double-click) it appears that the Characters (without blanks) value being reported is actually “Characters (without line-endings)”. See https://github.com/notepad-plus-plus/notepad-plus-plus/issues/3849

          • There was some suggestion that a BOM (Byte Order Mark) in the file or possibly certain encodings mess with the counts. I can’t find the main reference I’m thinking about for this, but here is a secondary one: https://notepad-plus-plus.org/community/topic/13117/go-to-offset-ignores-bom

            I don’t want anyone to work any more!
            Here is a screenshot.
            Thank you.

              Wow. Picture is worth the proverbial 10000 words. :-D

              My first thought is: How many bytes does Windows Explorer think this file has? Also 4?
