No festivity, no entertaining, but no remorse.
Notepad++ release is my New Year’s party.

I don’t wish you Happy New Year and all the blablabla.
I make you a better new year instead - by offering a new version of Notepad++:

thx, np++ was more stable than the year 2017 itself anyways.
maybe it’s gonna be the same for 2018 but i still have hope.

              Minor issue…

In recent versions, in the find and replace dialogue box, changes have been made around the “find forwards / backwards” options.

In some versions there are radio buttons at the bottom which are labelled “up / down”.

The latest version (7.5.4) has a tick-box for “backwards direction”.

I was working with a version ( not sure which it has since been updated, but probably 7.3+ ) where the only way to control the “Mark” direction was to set the up/down radio buttons on the Find tab.

Similarly, it is only possible in 7.5.4 to “mark backwards” if the direction is selected on the Find Tab, despite the operation being performed on the Mark Tab.

I am sure MS would call this a feature…

But this is not MS, it is quite possibly the greatest most stable piece of software ever run…

Could we please have the “Backwards Direction” checkbox on the Mark Tab as well please.

A sort-of-minor thing happening over the last 3-4 versions, i “Think” after 7.5.1

every time I run notepad++ an extra “spellchecking” button appears in the toolbar. At some point i got 7 or 8.

I used the “customise toolbar” plugin to remove all but one, and they appear again on next run.
I’m 100% one is added after every minor update since 7.5.1 but I’m not sure why there are even more ( today back up to 5…)

@donho At https://notepad-plus-plus.org/download/v7.5.4.html there is still:

Note that the most of plugins (including Plugin Manager) are not yet available in x64

, which is not true any more regarding the PM and there a currently 47 x64 plugins available out of 192 for win32(containing also some abandoned/deleted ones).

@donho Did (x64) get updated with the New Year’s party, just checked update, and it says no update available, and I’m on 7.5.3 (x64)?!

@Chip-Cooper, the auto-updates (or ? > Update Notepad++ menu item) usually waits a week or two before admitting to a new version, to make sure there are no killer bugs, before it will admit to a new version. If you want the newest version before it’s available through the internal update, you just have to download the newest installer from the link above, and install it on top of your old version.

edit: as seen on https://notepad-plus-plus.org/news/notepad-7.5.4-released.html, “Auto-updater will be triggered in few days if there’s no critical issue found.” (though “a few days” is generally 1-2wk, in my experience)

OMG (doh) That’s why that page I’ve seen a million times, was open on my browser… to read it. I had been working in another area, yesterday mentioning Notepad++ and I thought I opened it to get a link and when I saw it thought, ‘did I leave that open?’.

OK, though I always tell people, there are no stupid questions, just stupid answers (referring to my answers, of course and they’re not always stupid… I hope) What I’m trying to do here is cover my stupidity… I don’t remember opening that page earlier… and since it was 97.5% the same as before… (sigh)… doi! :-) It’s all good… thanks; I’m just going to excuse that, and tack it up to old timers creeping in…
In my youth I was an incurable perfectionist; but getting married eventually all but killed that (probably how I’m still married). And now, in my later years (snicker) I’ve given up significantly on perfection… (sigh).
And yet… machines are still unforgiving. and, I often wonder what I’m still doing programming and trying to keep up with technology… (deep sigh)
I can only think… 'but of course it is… on the page… and well… (sigh) Perhaps I can just inject some humor… Have a great day! and… Thank you.

Thanks for new version but I’m asking why did you remove very useful function in search window in new versions? I’ve reinstaled new version and install the old one 7.4.2, because i realy miss this function.
See on image what I have in mind.
                              Search button

                              Regards, Ivan

Just registered because I’m dying to get any news regarding the recently announced new updater system.

@donho announced that he’s not comfortable (to put it nicely ;)) with how @bruderstein integrated his employer’s advertisment.

So, is there at least a rough timeframe for us about a new plugin manager, straight from N++?

Starting from version 7.5.2 I have a problem with file status auto-detection.
A change is detected also if only access time change.
                                  Works great until 7.51.

It’s in progress. I cannot estimate the date of shipping this feature, but I guess I need one or 2 months more.

According to this github issue and this forum post it seems to only effect Windows XP systems. It seems once Notepad++ was moved to VS2015 is when the problem started to occur.
