Looking for a simple color picker plugin

  • Hey I’m looking for a plugin allowing me to highlight some text, right click, and select a color to colorize it.
    I’ve heard of “Quick Color Picker”, but it doesn’t seem to work I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. I copied the NppQCP(x64).dll in the plugin folder, restarted Notepad++ and then “settings -> Import plugin” and selected it. Everything is still the same, no color picker.

    I’m using Notepad++ v7.6 x64.

    but this will not as you are said
    C:\Program Files\Notepad++\plugins\color picker\color picker.dll

  • Ok thanks so now the plugin is working. But there is no option to highlight text then right click and pick a color.

  • for highlighting text you should create A custom UDL xml (user defined language)
    but this will not work with right click

  • So which kind of plugin would allow me to just right click on some highlighted text and then select a color from there ?

  • @G

    The intended use case of the Quick Color Picker plugin is selecting a color in a color selection dialog and insert its RGB color code into the document currently opened in Notepad++.

    I’m not aware of such a plugin. But you can use (menu) Search -> Mark All -> Using XXX Style. The drawback of this is that

    a) all instances of the selected word(s) will be highlighted in the whole document.
    b) there are only 5 marking colors available.

    If this is an acceptable workaround for you, you can add shortcuts to these menu entries to the right-click menu. To do this follow these steps:

    1. Click on (menu) Settings -> Edit Popup Context Menu and confirm the message dialog popping up. The file contextMenu.xml will be opened.
    2. XML files are structurized, they consist of opening and related closing tags enclosed in angle brackets. Thus you have to insert the lines below between the <ScintillaContextMenu> and </ScintillaContextMenu> tags. The order of the lines between these tags controls the order of the right-click menu entries. The first line (<Item id="0"/>) creates a separator line in the menu.
    3. Restart Notepad++.
        <Item id="0"/>
        <Item FolderName="Mark All" id="43022"/>
        <Item FolderName="Mark All" id="43024"/>
        <Item FolderName="Mark All" id="43026"/>
        <Item FolderName="Mark All" id="43028"/>
        <Item FolderName="Mark All" id="43030"/>

        <Item FolderName="Unmark All" id="43023"/>
        <Item FolderName="Unmark All" id="43025"/>
        <Item FolderName="Unmark All" id="43027"/>
        <Item FolderName="Unmark All" id="43029"/>
        <Item FolderName="Unmark All" id="43031"/>
        <Item FolderName="Unmark All" id="43032"/>

  • Hmm so I drop the idea of color.

    BUT, one plugin crashed my Notepad++, and I lost ALL my notes I’ve been maintaining for years, ALL OF IT.
    The backup folder has nothing, my notes were saved in files, each of them, even these files seem like they’ve been put back in time. How the fuck is it possible to alter a properly saved note and overwrite it past in time ? All my notes are fucked. All these years of precious informations. WTF !!!

  • @G

    How the fuck is it possible to alter a properly saved note and overwrite it past in time ?

    I would say, from npp point of view it isn’t.
    Must be something else, like recovering windows from a previous state etc …

  • “Must be something else, like recovering windows from a previous state etc …”

    I havent restarted my computer so no, no recovery of some sort, not Windows fault. It’s clearly a Npp thing.
    I feel naked without my notes that I keep for years. I don’t get how this could happen. Especially because I know where each notes are saved, and I know these files were clean because sometime I close all tabs an re open them one by one just to be sure everything is saved properly.
    And because of this crash the clean saves have been altered and put WAY BACK in time. It’s like it’s my notes from 2016.

  • @G > It’s like it’s my notes from 2016.

    and that is what make me say it can’t be npp.
    Npp doesn’t maintain a history database of each file edited.
    Once a file is saved that is the state npp knows.

  • There is no such thing as Windows recovery without any restart from the computer, right ?
    Pretty sure it’s a Npp thing because while the app was crashing, I’ve got something like 6+ warning boxes saying “data may be lost” or something like that, had to click on all of them before the app finally closed. Probably one warning box per openend tab I guess…

  • @G

    There is no such thing as Windows recovery without any restart from the computer, right ?

    That was an example, it could be backup software you are using or versioning software …
    I don’t know how your pc is setup.

    I’ve got something like 6+ warning boxes saying “data may be lost”

    So you should have an recent wer report don’t you?

  • I don’t have any backup / recovery software too. Npp crashed and notified me that data may be lost, Npp did, not Windows. I don’t get why you’re still trying to tell me that Windows fucked up and not Npp. We’re on the same boat, I love Npp, I’m not spiting on Npp, I’m just saying it crashed, then said data may be lost, and yes, lost it is.
    Why investigating on a Windows problem then ? But anyway, I’m still going to try to talk with you because I’m willing to do ANYTHING to recover my notes, and you’re willing to help me as I can see, so thanks for that.
    I googled WER since I’ve never heard of it, now I know, I’ve found the folder on my PC, but it’s empty.

  • @G
    I’m not trying to convince you that something else is the cause of your issue,
    I’m just trying to interpret the info you provide and see if it is logical that npp was
    the cause, because if not, there might be other things to check.
    The strange things are the old content and the data loss info because
    normally that is not the result of an application crash.
    Did you try to use software like recuva.
    When you know the file location you can even do a deep analysis to see if there is something to recover.

  • Recuva’s deep scan gave no result, I even tried to enable “show 0 byte files” lol.

    I think there is no hope…

    In my 6 plus years of using Notepad++, I have never seen this problem. In my over 25 years of using Windows, I have seen this problem before. That is why it is important to always have backups. Back in my Unix days, I had tar. In Windows NT days, I had NT-Backup. After that, in Windows XP days, I had Norton Ghost. Now with Windows 10, I have Acronis. If you don’t have backups, then you only have yourself to blame.

    And additionally: Don’t use fancy features where somebody tries to replace your brain with automatic machine actions. Whenever possible take the burden and take care of your matters by yourself, keeps your brain running. In all my Notepad++ installations sessions and automatic backups are turned off.

  • @Steven Haymes

    Thanks, very constructive. Might as well not say anything.

    Yes I should have make backups on 2 drives, BUT, I had sane files with no reasons to ever get corrupted, or almost, because Npp managed to do it. And for those saying “hey dont attack npp it’s the fault of anything but npp”, just have a look here: https://notepad-plus-plus.org/community/topic/17183/fuck-you-and-your-temp-files-management

    Seems like I’m not alone, at least 2 other people here encountered the same problem. One guy just says he has the same problem, and another one too, even if he’s not very polite, if we focus on the problem he has, and not his way of expressing himself like most people on this thread to avoid the topic, yes, he has the same problem too.

    Anyway, I’m done with Npp. Sad because I used it daily for years. But I can’t have this happen again, just because an outdated plugin crashed the app, it corrupted the content of all my tabs that were saved in a specific location and sane.

    I never thought this forum would be like that, it’s not a community for Npp to help each others, it’s the cult of “don’t touch my npp” and “try to avoid talking about npp having issues and lets blame something else”.

    Have a good night guys, thanks for those trying to actually help. Bye.

  • And btw:

    I have important files on my RAID, but not EVERYTHING, my notes are important but not as much as other things, that’s why no higher security was involved here, you don’t keep backup of EVERYTHING, there was no reasons for npp to totally corrupt all of my note files (at least 6 differents). It’s like if you download a game of 100Go, then it deletes itself 2 days later and you act like “hey blame yourself you had to make a backup”. YES of course, but it SHOULDN’T have happened.

    And I have to respond to that @dinkumoil, how low is it to say something like that ? Then don’t program/use plugins and addons for anything, let’s go back to the old days and use cmd for everything. Like wtf is wrong here ? Am I dreaming ? Can people stop with saying stuff which has no relevance ?

  • @G said:

    No. Plenty of people have reported their N-byte files being replaced by N-bytes of the NUL character. In my 4 years in the forum, I cannot remember anyone ever reporting that Notepad++ overwrote their files with a version from years ago that no longer exist. Your problem seems fundamentally differerent, or you have not yet been able to explain it in a way that we understand what you’re trying to say.

    @Ekopalypse and @dinkumoil both have long histories of trying to help users solve problems, or help confirm newfound (or re-surfacing) bugs.

    “dont attack npp it’s the fault of anything but npp”

    Nobody has said that. We are quite willing to acknowledge when Notepad++ has a problem – see here, for example, when a new variant of the NUL-file issue re-emerged last week.

    But when new, different, inexplicable symptoms show up (and none of us can think of a way to explain how Notepad++ could grab a copy of your file from years ago, and replace the existing file with that old version), we need you to help us figure out how that could happen. Cursing at us won’t help you, and it won’t help us help you. None of the symptoms you describe have given enough evidence to convince me that it’s something Notepad++ did… if you supplied real evidence to the contrary, rather than “it didn’t reboot, so it must be Npp”

    You said

    All these years of precious information

    but then said

    my notes are important but not as much as other things

    That doesn’t sound “precious”. If it’s important enough that the loss of the data causes you to curse at fellow users of a piece of software, then it’s important enough that you should take proactive control of backing up your data. I know that doesn’t help you now, but it’s a lesson you need to learn. It’s not just Notepad++ that can lose data when the OS crashes, or when a plugin crashes, or when a network drive goes down – any piece of software can lose data when unusual or catastrophic circumstances interfere with the normal safe operation of the program. In my decade of using Notepad++, I’ve never had it be the cause of lost data, whereas Microsoft bugs and bugs in other software have multiple times caused me to lose data. Through the years, I’ve come to the philosophy of “save early, save often”, where “save” includes “backup”. I just had my work computer die last week – I powered it on Monday morning, 10 minutes later, it just powered off and never came back. IT never figured out how to fix it, and issued me a new computer; thankfully, I had thorough backups, so everything that I cared about was saved as of Friday evening, so I didn’t lose anything. It’s just something important to do.

    all my tabs that were saved in a specific location

    that’s something you hadn’t mentioned before (or I cannot see it above; maybe I missed it). If you weren’t abandoning Notepad++, I’d start questioning along that line – was that a network location? or a cloud folder? Is there some Microsoft recovery or backup-software restore action going on? Or did some wires get crossed, and Notepad++ started looking at an old backup folder rather than the current / active location for those files? Or …

    But you’ve given up, and it’s supposed to be my day of rest, and I really shouldn’t have let myself be drawn into this. If you do come back, I hope you’re willing to help us help you, rather than just trying to play the blame game.
