autosave (backup) new not working for me

windows 10. notepad++ v7.8.7 autosave (backup) of “new n” files not working for me. i have preferences>backup>remember… checked. don’t know exactly when this stopped. when I exit notepad++ it now asks to save “new n” when it used to just automatically save a copy (i think in c:\users<name>\appdata\roaming\notepad++\backup which now only has files from 2019). probably something I new to change; don’t know what exactly. any help appreciated.
