Window layout problems after update

  • Re: Notepad++ v7.9.5 released
    Window layout is all messed up after updating to 7.9.5 - can’t figure out what’s going on… Tried blowing away all local settings, and going back to the previous version, but still seeing this.

  • It’s becoming an epidemic! At the very least a FAQ!
    :-(

    Sorry! I didn’t see the other thread until after posting.

  • @DomWesker

    so even after rolling back to your previous version you still have this issue?
    What was your previous version and can you post your debug-info?
    Is available from the ? menu.

  • Correct - I went back to 7.9.4, and it was still happening. I just tried ‘Run as Administrator’, and that doesn’t seem to have the same problem.

  • @DomWesker ,

    The confirmation that v7.9.4 has the same problem may be useful information. So is the behavior that RunAsAdministrator stops the problem. I have updated issue #9717 with that new data.

    After you did the RunAsAdmin, does running it normally again cause the problem to come back, or has it fixed itself? If it hasn’t fixed itself, could you try downloading a portable version and running from another directory?

  • Problem still manifests whenever not running as administrator.

  • Portable version of 7.9.5 doesn’t exhibit the problem for me (unzipped to folder on my Desktop)

  • @DomWesker

    are you using window manager software like
    https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/design-visualization/software/rtx-desktop-manager/ or similar from AMD etc. ?

  • No - nothing special in terms of window management. I do have an NVidia GPU, but not using anything non-standard/default.

  • Oh man, updated my video drivers and rebooted… Re-installed 7.9.5, and now the problem is gone. Godspeed on this bug! :D

    rebooted

    If I’m remembering correctly, a reboot only solves it for a short time (for other affected users).

    @Alan-Kilborn replied,

    Actually, in https://community.notepad-plus-plus.org/post/64735, @Dan-Schreck mentioned he updated his nVidia drivers and rebooted, and he hasn’t been back in the intervening 13 days to complain that it came back.

    So a reboot alone doesn’t look like it is permanent, but reboot+drivers might be enough.

    Good luck, @DomWesker . Please come back and let us know if the problem comes back.

  • I’m having the same issue, although I was on an older version of notepad++ when the problem started. I decided to try updating to 7.9.5 but it didn’t help. I am using a Radeon video card, so I doubt the issue is related to nvidia drivers specifically, I’m thinking more of a windows update. I’m only a fully patched Win10.

    Another thing that leads me to believe it is a windows update problem is that I’ve been having odd window rendering issues in other apps too. Microsoft SQL Server Manager Studio is not displaying panels properly, if I try to use the edit table function it displays the panel outside the application window, anchored to the top left corner of my screen, then it will start throwing dialogs about ‘mscorlib.dll’ errors. Then some other apps will not restore correctly after being minimized (slack). I wasn’t connecting the dots between these symptoms until I decided to check the forum here, so I will be more diligent about collecting information and trying to piece things together. I’ll update if I figure anything out.

  • Just tried Run as Administrator, seems to fix the rendering issue in the OP’s screenshot, but I’m still having problems loading other overlay panels in np++, specifically the ‘F7’ Search Results Window.

    Here is my debug info:

    Notepad++ v7.9.5 (64-bit)
    Build time : Mar 21 2021 - 02:13:17
    Path : C:\Program Files\Notepad++\notepad++.exe
    Admin mode : ON
    Local Conf mode : OFF
    OS Name : Windows 10 Pro (64-bit)
    OS Version : 2009
    OS Build : 19042.928
    Current ANSI codepage : 1252
    Plugins : mimeTools.dll NppConverter.dll NppExport.dll

    OS Build is the same as the OP

  • Uninstalling the following Windows Update resolved the issue for me!

    2021-04 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 (KB5001330) OS Build 19042.928 - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/april-13-2021-kb5001330-os-builds-19041-928-and-19042-928-cead30cd-f284-4115-a42f-d67fec538490

    I am now running on the following and can no longer reproduce the rendering issues in npp or any of the other affected apps (Microsoft SSMS, Slack)

    My working configuration is reporting as follows:

    OS Name : Windows 10 Pro (64-bit)
    OS Version : 2009
    OS Build : 19042.870
