I have my notepad++ setup as I like it, with a document list on the left hand bar showing all my working files.
On a previous install of Notepad++ on a seperate computer I could easily drag and drop these files to move them around, keeping eg php files all beside each other. On my new install on my new pc, this functionality is gone. I’ve been through the preferences etc and cannot find anything about this. All help would be greatly appreciated!

Can you be more specific about this older version?
        Meaning, which version it was?

I quickly tried a few versions, going back as far as 6.x, and NEVER saw that drag and drop was available for the Document List files.

@alan-kilborn Now you have me doubting myself, but i’m 99% sure I used to drag to reorder them regularly. My previous pc crashed so I don’t know what version it was I had been using, but it was likely years and years old, I don’t know if I ever updated it tbh.

Well, unless someone else chimes in and says it works for them, I don’t know what else to do. Are you sure you weren’t thinking of actual file tabs, which are drag-n-droppable for reordering?

@alan-kilborn Hmm, I’m going to assume I have Notepad++ confused with something else as you seem to know what you are talking about. May have been an unexpectedly senior moment on my part sigh, thanks anyway!

I’ve been accused of a lot of things, but rarely that. :-)

Ok… Yes, that would be a great feature… and it actually exist… you can reorder the list by moving the tabs in the main window – if the document list is not sorted.

Meanwhile, there is a quirk that I use to kinda reorder… simply, I recorded a macro…: right click move doc to other view, right click move doc to other view… [stop recording], [save macro]. I then assign a keyboard shortcut to that macro and then I can quickly move the current document to the bottom of the document list. It just makes them very easy to find – there at the bottom. So, I if I’m working on two documents in a large list, I will use macro on both of them and move those two to bottom of list.

Otherwise, click [document list] header 1 or 2 times so it’s unordered, and use drag and drop on the tabs along top of main window to order your document list whichever way you like.

actually for a lot of things I prefer to just name things alphabetically in order I want them… so looking at your list… then reimagine it explorer… or via a dir or ls

so this wouldn’t be about Document List, but variables or constants or whichever whatever
