Can't get DSpellCheck to work

After reading through the threads, I found and installed a couple of simple plugins, including DSpellCheck.
It now shows the icon in the menu bar, but it won’t do anything either automatically or when I click on it.
How do I get it to work?

Plugins > DSpellCheck > Settings, then download a dictionary for your preferred language(s), and make sure the other settings in that dialog make sense.
