An updated list of Notepad++ "Easter Eggs"
-
Hello, all,
On our forum, I recently saw something about the
Easter Eggs
fonctionamity of N++, but I can’t remember exactly when and where !So, I decided to dig into about this non-essential feature !
First, on Net, I found out two main links about N++ Easter Eges :
https://rogeorge.wordpress.com/2016/10/18/notepad-easter-eggs/
And, this one, previously mentionned by @dail :
However, time passed… and the provided lists are rather out of date. For example the list of Anonymous stops a
#154
. With N++v8.6.5
, this list increases to#206
!So, I did some tests are here are the results of my investigations !
First of all, how to get these
Easter Eggs
?Very easily ! Just write a name of a specific
Easter Egg
, from the one of the lists, below, select it and hit theF1
keyYou may also, in a Windows
command prompt
, type the command :notepad++ -nosession -qn=
, immediately followed with the Easter Eggs’s name. Note that double-quotes are required if this name containspace
char(s)Remark :
-
If you select the word random, whatever its case, and hit the
F1
key, a new tab will open and will display a randomEaster Egg
-
Result would be identical if you enter the command
notepad++ -nosession -qn=random
So, I opened a copy of the
Notepad v8.6.5
in N++ and I tried to isolate the interesting part containing these hard-codedEaster-Eggs
Not so easy as this part is written in the
UTF-16 LE
encoding. Luckily, after … some regexes, I succeeded to get a decent text file !Now, I’m left with some pieces of text that I cannot link to any
Easter-Eggs
names !Here is the short list of these texts. May be, some of you will be able to associate each of them with a specific
Easter Eggs
’s name !~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Don't worry if it doesn't work right. If everything did, you'd be out of a job. Now, here are the ( almost ) complete list of all the
Easter Eggs
of Notepadv8.6.5
, distributed in this post and the next two :random : A random quote, from the below list ! Notepad++ : The creation of Notepad++ is due to my need for a decent editor to edit the source code of Notepad++ Notepad++ #1 : I hate reading other people's code.@So I wrote mine, made it as open source project, and watch others suffer. Notepad++ #2 : Good programmers use Notepad++ to code.@Extreme programmers use MS Word to code, in Comic Sans, center aligned. Richard Stallman : If I'm the Father of Open Source, it was conceived through artificial insemination using stolen sperm without my knowledge or consent. Notepad++ #3 : The best things in life are free.@Notepad++ is free.@So Notepad++ is the best. L. Peter Deutsch : To iterate is human, to recurse divine. Martin Golding : Always code as if the guy who ends up maintaining your code will be a violent psychopath who knows where you live. Brian Kernighan : Debugging is twice as hard as writing the code in the first place. Therefore, if you write the code as cleverly as possible, you are, by definition, not smart enough to debug it. Seymour Cray : The trouble with programmers is that you can never tell what a programmer is doing until it's too late. Bill Gates : Measuring programming progress by lines of code is like measuring aircraft building progress by weight. Alan Kay : Most software today is very much like an Egyptian pyramid with millions of bricks piled on top of each other, with no structural integrity, but just done by brute force and thousands of slaves. Vidiu Platon : I don't care if it works on your machine! We are not shipping your machine! Christopher Thompson : Sometimes it pays to stay in bed on Monday, rather than spending the rest of the week debugging Monday's code. pixadel : Fine, Java MIGHT be a good example of what a programming language should be like.@But Java applications are good examples of what applications SHOULDN'T be like. Edward V Berard : Walking on water and developing software from a specification are easy if both are frozen. Gavin Russell Baker : C++ : Where friends have access to your private members. Roberto Waltman : In the one and only true way. The object-oriented version of "Spaghetti code" is, of course, "Lasagna code". (Too many layers) Cult of vi : Emacs is a great operating system, lacking only a decent editor. Linus Torvalds : Software is like sex: It's better when it's free. Steve Jobs : Picasso had a saying: "Good artists copy, great artists steal.".@We have always been shameless about stealing great ideas. Church of Emacs : vi has two modes - "beep repeatedly" and "break everything". Doug Linder : A good programmer is someone who always looks both ways before crossing a one-way street. Michael Feldman : Java is, in many ways, C++--. Mark Zuckerberg : "Black lives matter" doesn't mean other lives don't - it's simply asking that the black community also achieves the justice they deserve. Don Ho : Je mange donc je chie. Don Ho #2 : RTFM is the true path of every developer.@But it would happen only if there's no way out. Don Ho #3 : The smartphone is the best invention of the 21st century for avoiding eye contact with people you know while crossing the street. Hustle Man : Politicians are like sperm.@One in a million turn out to be an actual human being. Dhalsim : Pain is a state of mind and I don't mind your pain. Friedrich Nietzsche : There is not enough love and goodness in the world to permit giving any of it away to imaginary beings. France is bacon.@When I was young my father said to me: "Knowledge is power, Francis Bacon." I understood it as "Knowledge is power, France is bacon."@For more than a decade I wondered over the meaning of the second part and what was the surreal linkage between the two. If I said the quote to someone, "Knowledge is power, France is Bacon", they nodded knowingly. Or someone might say, "Knowledge is power" and I'd finish the quote "France is Bacon" and they wouldn't look at me like I'd said something very odd, but thoughtfully agree. I did ask a teacher what did "Knowledge is power, France is bacon" mean and got a full 10-minute explanation of the "knowledge is power" bit but nothing on "France is bacon". When I prompted further explanation by saying "France is bacon?" in a questioning tone I just got a "yes". At 12 I didn't have the confidence to press it further. I just accepted it as something I'd never understand.@It wasn't until years later I saw it written down that the penny dropped. #JeSuisCharlie : Freedom of expression is like the air we breathe, we don't feel it, until people take it away from us.@For this reason, Je suis Charlie, not because I endorse everything they published, but because I cherish the right to speak out freely without risk even when it offends others.@And no, you cannot just take someone's life for whatever he/she expressed.@Hence this "Je suis Charlie" edition.

Hello, @mkupper and All,
As usual, I’m trying to re-invent the wheel, my bad !
So, @mkupper, many thanks for pointing me in the right direction and also for providing a nice regex S/R :
I noticed one oddity :
-
The command
notepad++.exe -nosession -qn="Mosher's Law of Software Engineering"
works nice -
However, selecting the
Mosher's Law of Software Engineering
string, from within N++, and hitting on theF1
key, does not work at all
Just a curiosity !
Finally, the list of unclear texts becomes :
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Etc. (Abb.) End of Thinking Capacity. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 3 men are on a boat. They have 4 cigarettes, but nothing to light them with. So they throw a cigarette overboard and the whole boat becomes a cigarette lighter. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I'll buy a second iPhone 5 and buy a lot of iOS applications so that Apple will be able to buy Samsung (this shitty company)\nto shut it down and all the Apple haters will be forced to have an iPhone. Muhahaha... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Q: What's the difference between git and github? A: It's the difference between porn and pornhub. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
That’s what I got from the
You can use
-qn="Mosher's Law of Software Engineering"
from the command line and it works.The reason it fails when trying to activate it via
F1
is becauseMosher's Law of Software Engineering
is 36 characters long. TheF1
key handler has room for a 32 character author name. If the selection length then the code does the usual About dialog box if the selection is more than 32 characters.While tracking that one down I discovered that Notepad++ used to have an Easter egg that you would like. In some previous version if you had the file
EasterEggs.xml
in your Notepad++ folder and you used the author nameGet them all!!!
then you would see all of the Easter eggs. At some point that code was stubbed out. I don’t know github well enough to figure out versions of Notepad++ whereGet them all!!!
would have worked.This has been posted to github - https://github.com/notepad-plus-plus/notepad-plus-plus/issues/15170
Hi, @mkupper and All,
Searching on NET, I saw that putting a zero-length file, named
noEasterEggs.xml
, in your active N++ directory, prevents from displaying theseEaster Eggs
from within Noptead++ !Note that, in this case, selecting the whole
Easter Egg
’s name and hitting theF1
key will not produce any action, too !But, as soon as you select a part of the
Easter Egg
’s name, hitting theF1
key does act as the default N++ behaviour
Remark :
- Even if the
noEasterEggs.xml
file is present in the N++ directory, you still can display theseEaster Eggs
from Command Line with the command :Notepad++ -nosession -qn="
You mean this file, described in the User Manual? ;-)
Hmm… The User Manual does describe the
-qn
command line argument, but doesn’t describe how to get the Easter Egg to appear when usingF1
/ ? > About Notepad++ … I guess I should add that. Ah… I’llprobablydo it on the Ghost Typing page.Update: done (you may have to force-reload to get your browser to not use the cached version) – I put the links to the specific page in the source code, and to this topic, in a “spoiler” section, so that people who want the fun of searching the source code themselves won’t have that fun spoiled. And I put in a paragraph about select-then-
F1
to explain how to see them without the command-line option. (And I linked thenoEasterEgg.xml
paragraph to the command-line and ghost-typing pages.) -
@PeterJones & @guy038 - I’m sorry, the name
EasterEggs.xml
was a mistaken assumption on my part. I got lost in npp’s negative path not taken logic and so made the incorrect assumption that at some point the file name used to beEasterEggs.xml
and that as part of makingshowAllQuotes()
a stub that the name was changed tonoEasterEggs.xml
. Now I see that it’s also possible thatshowAllQuotes()
was never filled in with code.Npp’s
getQuoteIndexFrom()
function translates from an author name to a zero to N-1 index in the quotes table. I saw that it special cases the author nameGet them all!!!
and returns an index of -2. It also special cases the namerandom
and returns a random index value. If the name is not found in the list of quotes then it returns -1.Npp’s
IDM_ABOUT
orF1
key handler gets the length of the current selection and if it’s between 1 and 32 it gets the selection text callsgetQuoteIndexFrom()
with the text it found. AsMosher's Law of Software Engineering
is 36 characters long theIDM_ABOUT
is not is not checking that string as a potential author name.The
IDM_ABOUT
handler looks at the index fromgetQuoteIndexFrom()
and:- If the index is
-1
then it shows the About dialog meaning the selection did not not match one of the author names. - If the index is
-2
ANDnoEasterEggs.xml
does NOT exist thenshowAllQuotes()
is called. - If the index is NOT
-1
ANDnoEasterEggs.xml
does NOT exist then the quote based in the index value is displayed…
Npp’s
showAllQuotes()
function is a stubvoid Notepad_plus::showAllQuotes() const { }
As that stub only needed two or three lines of code to make it work I made the assumption that at some point the number of quotes grew to the point that showing all of them was too much of a blast of new-tabs, each with a quote spooling out and so the code was removed.
FWIW, the code that handles the
-qn
command line parameter is a bit different than theIDM_ABOUT
orF1
key handler. It shows a quote if the index returned bygetQuoteIndexFrom()
is NOT-1
. Fortunately, theshowQuoteFromIndex()
function double checks that the index is zero to N-1 where N is the number of quotes in the table. This means that while the namerandom
works with-qn
the nameGet them all!!!
which is index-2
gets ignored. As the-qn
code does not care about the length of the name the 36 character nameMosher's Law of Software Engineering
works with-qn
You state this like it is overall a “bad thing”. IMO, it in general is very typical code for its time.
I’ll not agree with “frequent use of hard-coded values”, generally. The case you’re discussing, though, may be an exception with its introduction of
-2
. The use of-1
is fairly typical, though. I’m not a fan of it, as it often makes things “awkward”, but I did just use it myself in the code that returns the color id of a tab (where-1
signifies “no color”).For use of “negative logic” and “path not taken”, I can’t comment unless some specific examples are given, but again I think N++ code is pretty typical of most code of its era in this regard.
