Notepad++ is a prime example of featur bloat! in a royal fashion. Why my friend have you made this beautiful editor into such a behemooth that is hard to use the basic features anymore?? I am a long time user and it really saddens me that with every update I had to search harder and harder to how disable line numbering column. It used to be so simple in preferences->misc then moved to editing and now I cannot find it even after 15 min searching!! Are you really serious? Line number column occupies a great portion of the editing real state and I prefer to hide it so I only see the editor. Please bring it back and leave it wHER IT USED TO BE in MISC section!

Hmm, I started at the top in the Preferences and worked my way down, and it took me maybe 15 seconds at most to find it:

I didn’t look at the “category” for it to find it, but the fact that line-number is a Margin item actually makes the settings easier to find than if it is in MISC..

Without change, software stagnates. And with change comes some sensical reorganization sometimes.

From time to time someone sees that some of the preferences or settings can get grouped in a way that seems to make sense. That’s why settings are then moved.

I agree that it can be a challenge to discover where a setting is. You flip through the sections and the eye/mind fails to spot what you are seeking. Later you discover it was a mountain hidden in plain sight.

Which is why my recommendation is always to check the User Manual > Preferences if you don’t find it right away, and search for the setting you are looking for using your browser’s find-in-page feature: searching for line number on that page finds it pretty quickly.

And until partway into the next major version, I keep notes like (this preference used to be in **MISC** section, before v8.x.y) – but sometime after a Major release, I clear out those old notes. (For example, the most recent change for Line Number was in v7.9.2, when it and all the other marginalia moved into Margins/Border/Edge; I didn’t get rid of the note until long after v8.0 was documented … actually, it was after v8.5 before I removed the v7.x notes – two years of trying to make it easier to find a setting that moved)
