German: Status bar in English

Not “that” important and maybe a well know topic, but why is the status-bar in German version not translated and displayed in English? (Length, lines, col, …)

A good question that an English user (me) has never pondered, for obvious reasons! :-)

Here might be a reason:

There’s limited space there – perhaps things like Ln and Col don’t translate into equivalencies that are as “horizontally short” in other languages? Personally, I think that even in English these are “too long”. L and C would definitely suffice.

Perhaps make a feature request for your translation desire?

Another good question, while pondering the (English) status bar is, why isn’t:

length : 22,067 lines : 190

this, instead:

Length : 22,067 Lines : 190

Everything else is nicely capitalized…

And…note the , in the length data; some locales use . for this separator; are people going to want this “translated” as well?

Lots of things to think about for the lowly status bar. :-(

Maybe get your opinion in there on how Sel should be translated into German. :-)

I just looked at the PR you linked to. Going back to the various issues that were linked from there, none of them contained the Sel being untranslatable; the issue Alan mentioned 5 years ago was other features regarding the Sel, and no one even bothered following his link to that issue to actually make a comment there about needing a translation.

So, given that the Developer was never told about the need for it to be translated, it’s rather surprising that it only took 5 years to fix something he wasn’t told about: the fact that it was ever fixed without being reported is what’s amazing to me.

And it really isn’t up to the developer, as I’m fairly certain he doesn’t know German.
Thus, it is up to the person providing the German translation; no idea why that person didn’t feel the need to translate Sel.

No, the PR just linked confirmed that the Sel string was not previously translatable, into any language. (It was a hardcoded string, not a string that could be translated using <langname>.xml)

The PR made it possible to supply a translation, German or otherwise.

So while this original post was about “German”, the fix was to make it translatable at all.
