We’re using a Xerox printer with an accounting code setup to popup on screen whenever we want to print. The windows version is Windows 10 22H2, i5-7500.

As a user, the process goes like this

      1. On a Notepad++ Window, hit C-p to print
      2. Windows Print Dialog pops up
      3. Select Xerox printer
      4. Click Print
      5. Wait for the Accounting code to popup
      6. Fill out information, hit OK, print

Notepad++ is often freezing on step 5. I’m not clear why.

Has this happened to anyone else? If not, just close this. I’ll be replacing this computer soon anyway, but if it happens to anyone else maybe its a bug.

      My print settings are these:
      e9e84d40-29e8-48b2-98c5-da5aed6ea6c1-image.png

Alt text: Print Line Number is checkmarked but isn’t working, No background color, 0 margin, no header, no footer.

Black and white was causing same issue a few days ago so I switched to no bg color and it happens with this too. The chance of this happening if I try to print multiple times in quick succession is very high. (e.g., tab1, print, tab2, print, tab3, print- freeze). I’m not sure if this is a Windows 10 22H2 problem or possibly a notepad++ problem. or a problem with the classic print dialog being used. or a problem with the way xerox interacts with the dialog interacts with notepad++

@Thomas-Zito said in Printing with accounting code popup - sometimes doesn't popup, causes notepad++ to freeze:

Notepad++ is often freezing on step 5. I’m not clear why.

In the time I’ve been on this forum I can’t remember any instance of the accounting code being an issue, mind you not many are possibly in a situation to need to use accounting codes and be on this forum.

Obviously it will require more testing to determine the real issue. What I did note was that you said the “print line number” didn’t work.

When testing and trialing different ideas it’s always best to ONLY change 1 step or process at a time.

        So some ideas are:

        1. Print to a PDF file (see if you have a “virtual” PDF print driver installed). See if that PDF file has the line numbers. Then print that to the Xerox printer.
        2. Do you have any way around the accounting code. Perhaps it’s possible to directly print (USB connection) instead of via a print server?
        3. If #2 not possible can the accounting code be removed temporarily to see if that resolves the issue.
        4. Have you got the latest version of Notepad++.
        5. Is your Notepad++ installation using plugins, if so there is a FAQ post about disabling them to see if issue is resolved. If resolved, then maybe a plugin out of date and needs updating.

Each of the above steps can narrow down the focus of the issue.

@Terry-R Good ideas. I’ll just note that since changing to Adobe PDF, now trying to even select the Xerox printer freezes too.

          1. PDF print works, but line numbers were missing. FIXED: It’s because I had disabled Line #s in Margins/Border/Edge. Personally, those should be separate and not have this interaction., maybe I’ll try making a change request over the weekend.
          2. Not at this time. When I get the new PC installed I’ll ask about doing that at the same time.
          3. echo #2
          4. v8.8.3 is the current version and I have that.
          5. All plugins are already disabled.

At this point I’m not willing to spend more time diagnosing and figuring out workarounds to this problem. I’m going to just assume it’s a problem with my print driver or my windows computer and move on since nobody else had this problem. If it happens in the future on the new install then I’ll believe it might be an issue with Npp and look into it.

          Can mods lock the topic?

It can be locked but we rarely do that. Only if the posts go off on a tangent or have a subsequent post with a very large time gap to the previous (so the post may have irrelevant information, maybe a later version has sorted the issue).

In your case the thread has only just started. Give it time, possibly someone may recall a similar issue, maybe other ideas pop up. I know you aren’t overly concerned as the situation may self resolve anyways, but please do come back to us if you have any updates.
