Auto-indent stopped working

I recently moved to a new PC. I reinstalled Notepad++ and copied over all of my configuration xml and python scripts. However, on this new installation the auto-indent does not work; the option (Settings > Preferences > MISC. > Auto-indent) does nothing.
I can tab in, type a line and hit “enter” but I am not taken to the tabbed position but rather to the left margin. I don’t need, or want any sort of predictive indenting; the way Notepad++ auto-indent used to work is all I need.
Any suggestions?

I temporarily renamed the plugins directory to remove them from the picture and it did not fix the issue.
