"Run" add-on for Run in Browser
-
Windows 11 - 25H2
I use the RUN add on and previously modified that to use my preferred web browser when editing an HTML file. I could select my preferred Chrome browser (Vivaldi) to that menu.
With the latest versions of N++ I cannot seem to modify that menu to add in the preferred browser as I had previously done. I’d also like to add in MS Edge which is also a Chrome browser for comparison sake.
I know the “Shortcuts” XML is the file to edit and that there is also a copy of that in %appdata% but so far I cannot put in my changes. In fact I cannot find anyway to edit or expand on this addition.
Because of this I had to downgrade to a prior version of NotePad.
Is there a preferred way to modify this XML file so I can add-in my preferred browser to the Run add on?
Thanks

v8.9 still works with all my saved Run menu commands in
%AppData%\Notepad++\shortcuts.xml, and I can still edit that file following the standard instructions for editing a Notepad++ config file found in the user manualIf you look at the
shortcuts.xmlfile’s properties in Windows Explorer, do you have write permission to the file (you should, and you need it)If that’s not it, you’ll have to say the exact steps you are using that aren’t working (and share your ?-menu’s Debug Info), otherwise it’s really hard for us to guess what’s going wrong for you.
I’d also like to add in MS Edge
No need: View > View Current File in > Edge has existed for years.

@PeterJones Hi - Thanks for the response. On my resident copy on my Win 11 system I seem to have managed to add this in ad described. Permissions were opened up and the added line took. It does not have keys assigned and I do not need that, just the ability to launch the browser.
However on the Portable copy of NP the Properties window does not offer a Security tab so there is no way to change permissions there.
As a passing thought, I tried copying the resident Shortcuts file to the portable version and replaced it with no effect.

You shouldn’t need to change permissions on the AppData files. Everything in
%AppData%\notepad++should already be owned by your normal user. If not, you’ve done something weird in your setup. However on the Portable copy of NP the Properties window does not offer a Security tab so there is no way to change permissions there.
If you put the portable copy someplace where your normal user has write permission, you shouldn’t need to set permissions. Moreover, I cannot replicate in Windows 11 ever. EVER not having a security tab in the Properties dialog for a file.

Doubtful.
Again, read my post, including the part about sharing the Debug Info and the actual contents of your
shortcuts.xml, because you’re obviously doing something wrong, and we cannot do a good job guessing what it is without hard data. -
@PeterJones Thanks. I will work on getting the debug. Until then…
After making the edit, which took by the way (saved), I closed the app as usual. Just to be sure I checked Task Manager and found 2 instances of it showing there even though all copies were previously closed by me. I killed it there, unmounted the thumb drive that has the portable version I’m trying to edit, and then did a system restart thinking that might clear anything else.
I remounted the thumb drive and still have an edited Shortcuts file but it is not recognizing the changes. That edit is working with my resident copy on the same system but that was also hard to change when I did it a while back.
Thanks for the help.
