Auto-update (UNIX tail) does not work

I have tried multiple versions of notepad++ (6.9, 6.9.1, 6.7.8) and the auto update (UNIX tail) function simply doesn’t work. The file just sits there and does nothing. I have tried keeping the window in focus, keeping it out of focus, setting Always On Top, etc. I have tried it on Windows Server 2008R2, Windows 7, Windows 10.
What am I doing wrong?

It only checks if the file is updated when the app regains focus.
