Notepad++ crashes games?

Notepad++ v7.1 x64 has been giving me some problems over the last few days. If I am playing a game, and need to open notepad++, when I do the game crashes. I’ve checked this against a couple of different games and it has happened on all of them (DooM, Guild Wars 2, Witcher 3, etc). If I have notepad++ open before I start the game, no problem.
I am trying to figure out why this is happening and the only common theme seems to be Notepad++, when opening, causes a video game to crash. I am hoping I am not the only one running into this problem and that someone might have a good idea of what is going on. I was hoping someone had seen something like this before.
