When I double-click on a word, this gets highlighted. The background colour of this highlight is such that it makes the text difficult to read. Is there a way to change it?

Note that I am not asking how to change the background highlight when selecting text (click&drag) - this is something I know how to do - but for double click on a word.

you can set the smart highlighting colours, which are used if you double click on a word, here:

settings > style configurator > global styles > smart highlighting and set the background colour from green to your prefered highlighting colour.
