Not posting here because was told to keep that “clean”, but…
What happened to the Release Candidate idea? We had it for 7.6.5, and admittedly it failed…but it was a good idea. Now we just have 7.6.6, no RC…

7.6.5 RC didn’t fail, it caught some things that would’ve no doubt been missed, then fixed in time for the final release… and 7.6.6 was just a quick hotfix to a crash problem.
Do you really expect every single edge case issue under some specific condition to get caught from a Release Candidate? There meant to catch some thing but you’ll never get them all, probably only a handful of people use them too with standard setups, there not going to find a random bug like “OS ver. WindowXP, right click on a tab 5x, crash happens.”

Nope, but it kinda sets a bad precedent to just jump back to old behaviors… :)

Bad precedent how? 7.6.6 had one bug fix to a major crash, it was fixed, there’s no need for RC’s to a single change, which was tested and reported fixed from the people reporting crash in the first place.

Just sayin that if the RC stuff is gonna be done, it should be done well. It was a little discouraging–even before the big bug was noticed–to see the RC then like, what, a day or 2 later the actual release (not sure what the “ideal” period would be; reality seemed a tad short). Which was THEN followed rapidly by the critical bug being found. Was it found because the real release happened and so many more people jumped on it, thus finding the bug? Or would a longer RC period have turned it up? Hmmm, will never know.

you are absolutely correct.
i think it would have been best to pre-announce the introduction of rc community trials, and how to handle them.
the first rc was very unexpected for quite a few.afaik, the short period between rc and a as soon as possible release, was maybe not just because of gpg, or to release it before 04.01, but also due to important issue reports with 7.6.4 and below.

maybe, maybe not.
but perhaps now, that a bug has been missed at the first rc batch, maybe a few who like testing will be more challenged to find a bug at eventual next rcs, or the appveyor builds, who knows.Hmmm, will never know.
