    (1) I cannot find options to change where NPP opens.
    On my 3840* 2160 screen NPP always opens partly off the top right of my screen.
    How do I change the setting to somewhere more sensible?

    (2) Before I close NPP I close all files. Yet on opening it always opens the same file very old file - how do I fix this setting?

      welcome to the notepad++ community, @Robin-Lamacraft

      did you by any chance install the unofficial 3rd party notepad++ release from the microsoft store ?
      please go to the notepad++ menu ? > debug info... > copy debug info into clipboard and paste it here.

      the unofficial release is known to have bugs, not remembering things like settings, last window position, etc.

        I was unknowingly using a very out of date 32bit version.
        Problem resolved by downloading and installing

        Notepad++ v7.6.6 (64-bit)
        Build time : Apr 3 2019 - 23:52:32
        Path : C:\Program Files\Notepad++\notepad++.exe
        Admin mode : OFF
        Local Conf mode : OFF
        OS : Windows 10 (64-bit)
        Plugins : DSpellCheck.dll mimeTools.dll NppConverter.dll
