[CRITAL-HELP] File Content Lost When Save
-
There may be help coming!
note that this might only prevent notepad++ from displaying a saved status.
but it does not bring back your file !once your file is gone, due to zero space on disk, it’s gone.
-
Yes, of course I meant help for future sufferers; not much to be done for the OP of this thread! Sorry for any confusion, or false excitement on the part of the OP!

Unfortunately it is not possible to recover your file.
You can try with data recovery software (“un-deleter”) like Recuva but the chances are close to zero. The problem will be fixed in the future versions of Notepad++ I hope.
I’m really sorry for your data loss.

It would be interesting to know why Notepad++ does this.
I filed a new issue describing the cause.

I’m guessing there is no fix for this even a few years later? Really upset. Had the same problem as the above poster, didn’t realise that the computer was doing an update on my computer which was pretty close to full (planning to do a bit sort out next week) and got an error. Then file was completely blank. I can understand not saving changes, but why completely blank? That’s a serious serious bug!!! I’ve check the back up for notepad and it’s empty. I’m guessing there’s no way to recover? I do have a separate back up but it’s about a week old so will take a long time to redo the info that has been put in since then :(

I thought there was a fix for this between 2019 and now – we can look it up.
But really, you need to post your version information in order for us to tell if the version you are using is before/after a possible fix. -
The latest release 8.1.9.3 has a fix for this issue, see the release notes.

@stefan-pendl Ok, I might be out of luck. I just checked and I must be using an old version, I guess I have had it on my computer for a while and it hasn’t been asking for updates in a long time now that I think about it, so I might need to remember to manually check (v.7.8.7)
Thanks anyway. I’ve download the new version. It actually wiped another file when I did that even though I now have space on the drive, + all of the backup I made of it just in case this very thing happened :( I’ve never had problems with this program before and have really liked it for a long time, but this is really, really awful.

The default is for Notepad++ to notify you when a newer version is available for download. however that setting can be turned off, perhaps you did that.
Anyways, now in the new version you just installed check “Settings”, “Preferences”, then “MISC”. In that window will be the option “Enable Notepad++ auto-updater”. Tick it if you want to be notified, or not but then you will need to monitor it yourself.

@terry-r Thanks Terry. It is already ticked. I don’t know why it wasn’t notifying me of updates and I never deliberately disabled it. Not sure why that happened. Just now that I think about it, it used to asked for updates, but not in some time. I’ve manually done it now anyway.
Will need to go and rewrite a second file it’s wiped on me now :(
