Update crash : How do I manually remove Npad++

Automatic update suffered crash as Notepad++ already open and then a power fail occurred. Now the app refuses to open, I tried uninstalling but windows tells me installer failed. Trying to reinstall using download fails with unable to initialise plugins. I’ve tried these steps both before and after shutting down and restarting. How do I manually remove all traces of the program so that I can do a clean reinstall.

“All traces”:

Delete C:\Program Files\Notepad++ or C:\Program Files (x86)\Notepad++ or wherever you tried to install it
Delete %AppData%\Notepad++ for any/all users
use regedit and search the registry for notepad++.exe and maybe for the installer’s name as well; delete any keys that are safe‡ to delete.

‡: Caveat: never edit the registry if you don’t know what you’re doing. You are responsible for the consequences of any registry edits you make. Make sure any critical data is backed up before starting this process. Use at your own risk.

Since my inital post I have tried all the reccomendations except modifying the registry because I an afraid that I will inadvertantly delete something vital. I still get the ‘can’t initialise plugins try again later@ on attempting a reinstall of Npad++. However I am now getting a couple of worrying messages whenever I boot the machine ’ Cant find app associated with … D9f1.tmp’ and ‘Unable to access rarSfx0 folder’. Initially I only got the error messages once ( as usual neither of the messages actually tell me which application is trying to access them) but now they appear several times during the sequence where windows is populating the icon bar.
Also I have searched for plugins directories and there is a notepad ++ plugin directory in the Gnu Octave structure. I’m not sure whether this is correct or not.
Can anyone suggest a route to restore the machine or am I going to have to reinstall windows and all my software again with all the consequences that that would entail?

Gnu Octave is a completely different program than Notepad++, and has nothing to do with the Notepad++ project. It may have its own plugins directory, but that has nothing to do with Notepad++. If Octave bundles a Notepad++ copy with their distribution (which they are legally allowed to do, based on the LICENSE), then maybe there really is a Notepad++\Plugins directory there. But that would mildly surprise me (and some quick poking at Octave’s site doesn’t show me any obvious reference from Octave to Notepad++).

Those .tmp files and rar folders likely have nothing to do with Notepad++.

I think you’ve done a lot of mucking around, and you are in a strange situation. We are not generic tech support / Windows support, and if you are having problems at bootup, and if you don’t have Notepad++ left on your machine, then the problem is a Windows problem, not a Notepad++ problem. I don’t know how you got to where you are, but I don’t think we can help you out of the mess you’re in now.
