Lost important document after upgrade to v8.4.6 (64 bit)
-
Hello, I recently upgraded Notepad++ this morning to V8.4.6 (64 bit) and to my surprise the document I had been working on for a month was gone. I made sure to save that document at the end of every day. When I looked in the backup file, the only thing that appeared was a new document dated 10/10/22 (today). I really need that old document back, if anyone is able to assist. I am working on a Windows 10 computer version 21H2. Thank you.

Are you sure it is really “gone” or is it just not present in Notepad++'s default session as a tab? Since you saved it, it might still be at its original path in your file system (i.e., Notepad++ may just have lost track of it to automatically open it into a tab for you) – you just have to remember where that was.
There’s also some advice for you in the FAQ.

@Alan-Kilborn after updating, the new file is the only text document in the location where notepad++ saved my documents, which was This PC>C:drive>Program Files>Notepad++

That statement says to me that you haven’t actually saved the document, and given it a name. You may have relied on the backup scheme that Notepad++ uses as a temporary measure.
Do you recall if the document had a real name, or just “new 1” or similar. If really saving the document, it would be more likely you would put it someplace else, not under the program files folder structure.
Alternatively did you manually update Notepad++, so maybe you downloaded the 64bit version and you previously used the 32bit version, or portable version. If so then the previous installation may still be there.

In my response, I took the OP’s statement at face value. Of course, if OP is a total noob, then they may not have a concept of what “save” means to using a computer program?!

Maybe that is a perfectly reasonable place, as long as you have permission to do so, and I believe by default Notepad++ will even suggest that location.

(again, for a noob)
