      Hey everyone!

Hoping to find some answers here

Last night I shut down my computer, everything was well

Today I woke up with Notepad++ totally resetting the settings I set for it (the color theme, the size of the text etc) and unfortunately it also randomly deleted all the content inside one of the notepad documents that I had written

Why is this happening / how can I recover the document? It was very important

      Thank you

You have given us very little information. But in spite of that we will try to help. In the first instance read the FAQ post titled “Periodic Backup vs AutoSave Plugin”.

Then you will need to provide information such as Windows and Notepad++ versions. Again there are FAQ posts expending on this. Also you say you shut down the PC, did you close Notepad++ first?

@Terry-R Sorry for the lack of info. I was a bit stressed out and annoyed when I left this -

I saved it for sure, and I’m about 90% sure I also closed it

          I use Windows 10 Pro, and the Notepad++ version is 8.1.2 32bit.

I think it might have something to do with the fact that I had 0 space left in Local Disk C? (I installed an app and it took up all the space)

Can I do anything about it?

Well, that is a death wish! If that’s true there is probably very little likelihood of retrieving anything.

If you read the FAQ post I referred to previously you will have read that in the event of the file having been deleted there is sometimes a chance of “restoring” it. But in order to do so, there needs to be free space (and generally lots of it).

You see, Windows will delete a file, but it doesn’t actually clear out the space, just tags it as being free. If there is heaps of free space, the system (and other apps) will use the free space, but will likely not overwrite the area the deleted file used for a period of time. That’s the chance you have of recovering it. The smaller the free space available, the less time before your deleted file is overwritten.

With 0 (zero) free space I think your chance of recovering the file (if deleted) is also 0.

You can try to search your PC for the file if it hasn’t been deleted. Normally I’d say install an app that can search the contents of all files for a known string that your file contains, but with 0 free space that’s not possible.

It may not help much now, but going forward you will need to maintain a better system, with free space and also make sure the backup system within Notepad++ is set to how you want it, again read that FAQ post.

            Good luck
            Terry

Well, there are a couple of Notepad++ issues on just that circumstance, see #5664 and #11822 for maybe some relevant reading.
