Contents of clipboard being lost

If I copy text from Notepad++, I can only paste it into another document if that document was open with I copied.

For example, this process works:

1. Open Word document
2. Copy text from Notepad++
3. Paste text into Word document

But this process does not work:

1. Copy text from Notepad++
2. Open Word document
3. Paste text into Word document

Is there a way I can modify the settings of Notepad++ to get around this problem?
