I would greatly appreciate any help or advice. Notepad++ had always saved my open files on a computer restart. I took this for granted and had a number of open files that I was working on during a restart. But this time, it lost all the files. Can anyone tell me if there is a way to open these unsaved files from the software. Or where they might have been stored on my drive so that I can try to recover them. (Windows 8.1)
Thank you so much in advance for any help!

Hopefully you have backups enabled. If so check %APPDATA%\Notepad++\backups (or some directory very similar)
