One of the main things I use Notepad++ for is its awesome ability to remember the current session.

Unfortunately, it often forgets the previous session, and I have to go fishing in the backup directory to figure out what I lost.

I tried a complete reinstall, and it is still persisting, and has been happening for about 6 months. I do update it regularly via chocolatey and am on 7.2.2 now.

      Any suggestions?

You could try the Session Manager plug-in, which lets you name and save any number of sessions:

I am not looking for a plugin to fix broken functionality in the application. I’d like to see the application fixed instead, because the workaround to open files from the backup is very time consuming.

This community is all about work-arounds. Sometimes real fixes are really slow to happen. :-)

If you want a fix, do your part of debugging. Tinker enough until you come up with a short sequence that reproduces the problem and perhaps then someone will try to fix it in the code.
Otherwise it is just your problem and nobody cares.
