    I run Windows 8 in High Contrast mode–that is, white text on black background. Notepad++ seems to ignore this. Or am I missing something?

      Notepad++ style is configurable but indeed does not “respect” windows theme.
      Google for Notepad++ dark themes. E.g. here .

        Thanks for the quick response. I like the looks of those dark themes. However, I don’t see a ‘themes’ subdirectory below notepad++. Should I have selected a non-default option on installation? If so, how can I repair it?

          @Steve-Sherman

          I have never done it myself, but I presume you could just do Settings (menu) -> Import… -> Import Theme(s)… and then browse to the xml file that describes the theme…

            Thanks, but I already tried that (I’ve been hacking away while waiting for expert advice). Currently I’m using something called HotFudgeSundae, which came with the package and is pretty easy on the eyes.

              Actually DeepBlack is even better, pretty much what I wanted. So thanks for all advice and taking the time to help. I think I’m where I want to be now.
