Notepad++ 7.5.3 release

Thank you and congrats for the excellent and very useful editor Notepad++ is!
I’d like to contribute with reporting what may be a bug.
I’m receiving error:
--------------------------- curl error --------------------------- Unsupported proxy 'https://<user>:<password>@<server>/', libcurl is built without the HTTPS-proxy support. --------------------------- OK ---------------------------
When I’m trying to update Notepad++ on menu ? | Update Notepad++.

Frankly i do not see that much of the changes but this may have to do with np++ mostly being a secondary editor nowadays (because it’s just have fallen out of fashion). I mostly updated an old version due to the CIA-hack thing. All the other changes basically go unnoticted. It’s nice that someone is working on it though and it’s nice that it’s still lean and mean in comparison to other bloated editors.
Top of my list would be a complete UI overhaul though and maybe a friendlier plugin manager and/or scrapping it and making plugins simpler to create or even make plugins compatible with some other editor that has a large amount of them available.

Yes I think fashion is the reason how people pick a new editor, so
‘marketing’ is important and UI is like a package of a product.
I personally don’t look at the package much but there is room
for improvements certainly.making plugins simpler to create or even make plugins compatible with some other editor that has a large amount of them available.
Creating plugin in C/C++ is of course too hard. Younger people
don’t understand a word in C++, so it is a dying language for the new generation.
My opinion, an good step would be to work more on Python scripting, probably
as the core part of the editor and improving it further.
Many things can be made by means of scripting and I can’t imagine
a modern editor without good scripting system.And, as I already asked in the forum, there should be a
way to bind keys without modifiers, i.e. an additional separate mode like
in VIM, this will definitely attract more advanced users, worrying
about editing productivity. I personally can workaround it with AHK
scripting on OS level, but AHK programming is definitely not what I would
call easy or fun.But all in all NPP feels really good and fast application.
Hope this course of minimalism and perfrormance will stay. -

Hey there. I’m having some trouble with getting npp to not use appdata. I’ve made sure that the ‘do not use appdata’ option is checked when running installer, but it doesn’t seem to work. I’ve also looked in the debug info section at the local conf mode after both having the option for do not use appdata selected and not selected while installing and it always seems to be set to off. Is this a bug or am I missing something along the way? OS is win10 enterprise x64.

Soon after I posted my first comment on Facebook, I realized something from-bad-to-worst happened to Don Ho, the author of Notepad++. I used to visit this community a few months ago. I came back and my prediction came to fruition.
I read his posts regarding the latest release of NPP (7.5.3). It is outrageous how he views the users of his application (a pretty good one until 7.4 especially). The language he uses is definitely the sign of a druggy-monkey.
“donho posted 14 days ago
No praise? No compliment? Not even a “thank you”?! You heartless ungrateful bastards!!!
I’ll fucking continue to improve Notepad++ and that’ll make you all feel regret for not saying a word on my release!!”The users are simply puppets and cult addicts who only exist to satisfy the sick ego of an ungrown child! He can’t live with the idea that the users of NPP have lives, unlike Don Ho and a few cult addicts.
A loyal visitor and user put it eloquently:
“Be thankful it hasn’t gone the other way? LOL BTW… still on 7.2.2 — thank you for THAT one…”He, like myself and most NPP users, got sick and tired of the maniacal campaign of updating-by-degrading NPP.
I wouldn’t be surprised o hear the druggy-monkey mouth-foaming asking ALL NPP users to stop using the editor — or else he will sue all of them in the International Court of Hague! He is that sick now…

no, No, NO…that’s not what I meant (hopefully nobody else , esp. @donho, interpreted it that way)!
The real reason I’m still on 7.2.2 is:
I’m just too LAZY to upgrade!
[I use a very customized portable install and it takes a lot of work to upgrade it]
:-D

It seems to have some error in ‘Autodetect character encoding’ feature.
My text file is encoded in OEM 852.
Npp 7.5.3 and 7.5.2 detects this file as OEM 737.
But Npp 7.5.1 detects it correctly as OEM 852.Thanks.

This is a known bug in v7.5.2 and v7.5.3 so I’d suggest you stick with v7.5.1 for the time being.
Pull request to fix the issue is here https://github.com/notepad-plus-plus/notepad-plus-plus/pull/3992

@donho
Compliments?
What about two proposals for improvement?- What about to insert in find - replace dialog a button to switch the find field value with the replace field value?
- And what about to implement a real ruler? ------ not that one to insert into text as ASCII text it self… a little bit awful and not really useful
I know there is a plug-in for the ruler out there but it is a bit bugged: it doesn’t zoom accordingly with the text content on Ctrl+mouse wheel.
Almost forgot:
Thank you so much and best compliments for the beautiful job done. -
still on 7.4.2, thank you…
and now try vscode & sublime-text to dev reactjs -
I really like Notepad and been using it for quite awhile now. However … ever since 7.5.3, I will occasionally get an error when doing a save which causes windows (8.1) to close Notepad. The error apparently causes Notepad to wipe out the document that I was trying to save and so I lose everything that was on it. This has happened more than 4 times so far. No clue what is causing the error as Notepad doesn’t give me an error but does something that causes Window to end the program. Never had this problem in the earlier versions.

welcome to the np++ community
do you have another windows 7 pc (any release/service pack) or windows 10 pc (any release/service pack) where you can try to reproduce all steps done in 8.1 that lead to your force close of np++ and your loss of your document ?
or can you reproduce this behavior in windows 8.1 by specifically doing a sequence of steps ?
if not, it might be only occurring on your current 8.1 installation
you can avoid losing everything by enabling session snapshot and periodic backup in the settings menu:
settings > preferences > backup > enable session snapshot and periodic backup(you can set the backup interval in seconds)
hint: if it was already enabled, you might find your lost files in the backup path shown on your backup settings page
-
@Meta-Chuh Thanks for the backup reminder, I’ll check on the settings! Meanwhile, I do have access to a windows 10 pc, though most of the time I’m using Notepad on the 8.1. I’ll try some things and see if I can figure out a way of consistently reproducing what is happening.
Also I was curious to see if I was the only one having this problem. Thanks for the assist! -
I found the 64-bit version of the plugin manager and dropped the files for it in the Plugins folder. All it working for me now.

@Joe-Abdo There was an issue with the DSpellPlugin, bundled with N++ since 7.5.2 again. The fix is available with 7.5.4 or by an update of the DSpellPlugin, see https://github.com/Predelnik/DSpellCheck/releases. With version 1.3.5 the issue should disappear.
