Need help with Function List for JavaScript in an HTML file

There seems to be a lot of confusion in previous posts about what can be done to make the Notepad++ Function List plugin work with JavaScript. I’m using JavaScript in HTML files, how can I get the Function List to work?
Npp 6.7.3 if that’s helpful, but the problem also occurs in the 7.x versions.
