Double-clicking a file keeps opening new Notepad++ instances endlessly

When I’m in multi-instance mode and I double-click a file in Windows Explorer, Notepad++ opens a new instance, then immediately opens another one, then another one… Keeps doing it in a seemingly endless loop. Killing instances is not possible, they appear too fast. The only way to stop it is to reset the machine…
Removing “Open file in another instance” from shortcuts.xml makes no difference.
