How to open a new window?
-
Under “File” on the menubar one would expect to see an item for “New Window” … but there isn’t one. Nor is there a help system for Notepad++ explaining how to do such a basic thing. Nor is there a way to display two tabs within a single window side by side.
Even as basic an operation like attempting to start a new instance of the program from the Windows start menu does not work! And there is nothing under Settings|Preferences that turns on the ability for the user to run multiple instances of the program.
I’m at wits end after hours of looking for a solution: I am still stuck in a single window mode that will let me have a million files open at once … but only lets me see them one at a time.
There has got to be some way to use Notepad++ to compare two files, but so far I can’t find a way to see more than one file at a time.
I am astounded that I am going to have to resort to using a piece of crap like MicroSoft’s Notepad to open my second document so that I can compare it to the first.

Settings -> Preferences -> Multi-instance
Right click on filename in tab, choose “Move to other view” for split screen.

Many thanks. Nice to know I won’t have to use things like Word again just to view files side-by-side.
