Notepad++ hangs after changing style

we would need some more information and testing from you, to be of assistance.

• please download the portable notepad++ version 7.6.3 from >>> here <<<.
• extract npp.7.6.3.bin.zip to your desktop.
• run the portable version by double clicking on the notepad++.exe inside of the npp.7.6.3.bin folder on your desktop.
• change any styles and check if notepad++ still hangs.

note: the portable notepad++ can coexist with your installed notepad++ and runs completely isolated, making it ideal for testing purposes.
anything you try out there, will not modify your installed version.

if the portable version behaves as you would expect, we can probably exclude any system wide problem, and begin to analyse your installed version:

• close the portable notepad++ and open up your installed notepad++.
• go to the menu ? > debug info... click on copy debug info into clipboard and paste this information here, for further analysation.

Well since this apparently doesn’t happen for EVERYONE, how about a more exact set of steps you are doing?

No Problem:

• Starting NP++ without selected Style
• Goto: Settings -> Style Configurator…
• Change: Selected theme: “Default” to “Choco” (other styles has the same effect)
• NPP hangs, uses about 10-20% of CPU Power , shortly after taskmanager declares as hanging.
• Kill Process

Suddenly this Problem appeared some time ago and a complete deinstallation worked fine - for some time.

i can not reproduce this on windows 10 and windows 7 using notepad++ 7.6.3, both installed and portable, both x86 and x64.

the next thing i would try, is to create a new local windows user account, log off the current account, log in to the new account, and retry with both the installed version, and the portable version, to exclude that the current user hive has something that produces this.

if this does not work either, i would boot into safe mode, and try notepad++ styles like choco there, to eliminate the posibility, that any other auto starting software is causing this.

also your debug information might help.

thank you for your debug info.
this looks exactly as clean as my windows 10 test setup, where i just tried to reproduce your experience by changing to choco and other styles.

so we can exclude something wrong in notepad++ itself, as your installed version looks clean and the portable version produces the same result.

currently i have no further ideas, than trying out a new account as well as trying out safe mode. sorry about that.
