Non-binary system?
In an octal system, it would be boy, girl, ?? … confused.
Systems can be viewed as octal, hex, decimal… and any number of less frequently used systems. IMO we simply refer to the same reality with different words…
Why limit one particular system, while suggesting that any other is just fine?

0 = not-boy, not-girl
1 = boy
2 = girl
3 = boy+girl
4 = …?So… what they mean by non-binary is actually pro-quaternary system!
